Tavern in Soweto: First POS System, Zero Monthly Fees

The business

A township tavern in Soweto, Johannesburg, doing 50+ covers on weekends with a mix of drinks, grilled meat, and sides. The owner ran everything on paper — handwritten orders, a notebook for stock, and a cash box with no reconciliation system. Monthly turnover estimated at R45,000.

The problem

Cash discrepancies every weekend — sometimes R1,500 to R2,000 short with no way to trace where the money went. No sales records, no inventory tracking, no end-of-day reports. The owner suspected staff were giving away drinks but had no evidence. Previous POS providers quoted R1,200–R1,800 per month, which was more than the profit margin could absorb.

The switch to MangoPOS

MangoPOS was installed on an existing Windows laptop the owner already had. R299 once-off setup included a 32-item menu with categories (Drinks, Grill, Sides), 4 staff profiles with PINs, and Epson printer config. Total training time: 1 hour with the owner and 2 staff. The tavern was live that same evening.

The result

Cash variance dropped from R2,000 per week to under R200 within the first two weeks. The owner now has daily Z-Reports showing exactly what sold, who sold it, and whether cash matches the system. Void tracking with manager PIN approval eliminated the "free rounds" problem entirely. The staff timeclock also revealed that two employees were clocking in 30 minutes late every Friday — something the owner had no visibility on before.
