The business
A busy take away in Lynnwood, Pretoria, serving a lunchtime office crowd and weekend families. Between 60 and 90 orders per day on weekdays, peaking at over 120 on Fridays. The menu had 38 items with modifiers — sizes, extras, substitutions. Two counter staff handled orders, payments, and packaging simultaneously using a paper system and a basic card machine.
The problem
Paper orders were causing chaos at the lunch peak. Staff were calling order details to the kitchen verbally, handwriting was sometimes unreadable, and wrong items were going out 8 to 12 times per shift. Customers were losing patience, especially on Fridays. Several regulars had stopped coming after receiving the wrong order twice. Cash reconciliation was done by estimation — the owner had no way of knowing the exact day-end total. Stock ordering was a weekly guess with no sales data to guide it.
The switch to MangoPOS
The owner contacted MangoPOS on a Monday. By Tuesday morning, the 38-item menu had been imported with all modifier groups (small/large, extra sauce, no onion, add cheese) and two counter staff profiles were configured with PINs. A receipt printer was set up at the counter and a kitchen print station was installed at the pass. The owner and both staff were trained in 45 minutes. The system was live before the Tuesday lunch rush — R299 total setup cost.

Order errors dropped to zero in the first week. Counter staff select items with modifiers on screen and the kitchen gets a printed ticket every time — no shouting, no handwriting. The first full Friday produced zero wrong orders. Cash reconciliation moved from estimation to exactness: the end-of-day Z-report shows sales, voids, payment splits, and expected cash to the rand. After two weeks, the sales breakdown revealed that their most-modified item — the loaded chicken wrap — was also the most time-consuming to build. A small recipe simplification reduced kitchen time per order by roughly 90 seconds during the rush, which cleared the Friday backlog noticeably.
